How will we pack this house and take it into the new house? As a three-year-old, I couldn't process how we would shift to the new house, without packing the structure of the old. How would I take all the birds and chirping from the window, the pink bathtub, and the staircase being my slide from my world above, to the world below? Ultimately in the new house, I go back to the house of these memories to comfort me.
House of Memories is a handmade book that follows this curiosity, through structural elements and folds used in the accordion book.
The cover page opens holding a never-ending card that tries to fit all the structural elements of the house.
The curtains open to reveal a flag book that contains the views from the window along with different shapes of clouds that have been stuck with cotton to add texture.
The spread opens to reveal the colourful staircase that was the slide from the world above to the world below.
This spread lets the reader create their own drawings, by flipping each drawing, mixing and matching them.
The 'house of memory' pops up when opened. The elements of the illustration have been cut and then stuck to pop up from the background.
